Mr Tyson, 1973...
Linda Bain (now Reid) was at Holmston from 1968 to 1975.
"Many happy memories spring to mind but your readers may be
interested in the following story. Mr Tyson was my Primary 5 teacher.
He
was brilliant.
He bet the class next week's pocket money he could make a
stamp stick to the classroom ceiling without his feet leaving the floor.
He
often bet us next week's pocket money but since there was never an actual
financial transaction the class eagerly accepted the challenge.
He then
took
a coin from his pocket, licked the stamp (a 1973 commemorative I
remember),
placed it face down on the coin then threw the coin as hard as he could at
the ceiling where the stamp stuck!
It was still there some years later
when
I visited the school. The room in question had windows out to Ashgrove
Street and was midway along the main corridor. Don't suppose it's still
there?"
The stamp may have been there until the refurbishment in 1995, but there have
been a lot of changes at the Ashgrove Street side since. Unless the painters painted
over it?
