More History in Ayr
Former Pupil Norman Faulds sent us a class photo from his
father's first school, Lady Jane Grey's school in Ayr.
Norman's father, Sam Faulds, went to Lady Jane Grey's school
in Charlotte Street, before going on to Smith's Institution (now Holmston)
in the 1920s. Sam's Class Certificate from
Smith's Institution is here.
See below for another, older photo from Norman's collection, something which appears on the Holmston badge...
From an earlier period, Norman has this photo of old Ayr - the Fort district in the 19th century, when there
was a Fort...
People in Ayr today know that there is a "Fort District" near
the harbour, with some terrace houses,
tennis courts, and a tower, the much older remains
of historic St John's Church.
But apart from a few very
solid looking stone walls, there's nothing left of the
substantial Fort, originally built by Oliver Cromwell's
forces to control this part of Scotland after the Civil
War of the 17th century.
The Tower of Ayr is part of Holmston's badge, designed in 1950 and partly based on the
Coat of Arms of the old Ayrshire County Council, which controlled Holmston Primary School
after 1929.
There are more photos of old Ayr from last year's Primary 7 expedition,
in our back numbers, in Issue 13 - take a look.
