Remembering Some Teachers...

Miss Sumner, retiring in 1967 Miss Sumner, retiring in 1967

No-one forgets a good teacher... said a recent advertising campaign to try to recruit some more.

Holmston's had a lot of good teachers over the years, and we can't mention them all.

But there are notes on one or two, sent by Former Pupils.

One widely remembered teacher was Miss Barbara Sumner, who taught the pupils to sing, so well that they won competitions. At the peak, in 1954, every class at Holmston, from Primary 2 to Primary 7, came First or Second in competitions at the 29th Ayrshire Music Festival. They owed this to Miss Sumner's enthusiasm and teaching skill.

We've a page about Miss Sumner, click here.

As well as giving you an education, teachers can be showmen and show-women, (and teach you something from that too). One such was Mr Tyson, remembered by Linda Bain, here.
