Saint Andrew's Night Reunion

New This Issue...

Carol Bain wrote to us to accuse us of being a "cob-webby" site. "Nice site, but time for an update? You don't want to be known as a cob-website, do you?"

Carol's not an FP but says "my husband is and I've been trying to get him to write in. His excuse has been that the site is dead - so I hoped to prove him wrong.

"Seems that I did.

"Best of luck with your endeavours."

Donnie Briggs wrote to us from near Kilmarnock, to add his name to our list (1956-63) and his two brothers, Edward Briggs (1952-59) and Raymond Briggs (1954-61).

Donnie's working as a Process Engineer in Ayr. His brothers are both doctors - Edward a General Practitioner in the Falkirk area, Raymond a Consultant Surgeon in Stirling.

Later, Donnie got in touch with Ann Cameron, now Knight. Ann was also a pupil, 1956-63. See her letter, below.

Robert S. Bain wrote to us from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Robert is the husband of Carol Bain (above).

He had some interesting news, plus memories of friends -

"I'm writing to you from the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico where I run a small transport consultancy practice. My name is Robert (Robbie) Bain and I attended Holmston from 1966 - 73.

"One of my best friends at primary school was Stevens Fawcett. The Fawcetts lived only a couple of doors away from the school and one of my lasting memories is of Stevens running home when the going got tough! Another friend was Miles Crane who, I think, emigrated to Canada before finishing at Holmston.

"As I approach 40, my memory is failing me badly - but your website started to bring things back. I even remember getting the bus home (our family lived in Holmston Crescent) with an old thruppence piece in my mitts. I think my mother tied the mitts together with string (behind my back) so that I did not lose them!!

"Great site!"

Your editor wrote back to Robert, apologising for the late update (had 'flu during March), and accusing him of having a glamorous job...

"Transport consultancy in the Caribbean sounds pretty glamorous! Rum, pineapples, Havana cigars..."

Robbie replied with more news - he's swapping the delights of Puerto Rico for Leeds!

"Many thanks, Alan.

"Actually it was pretty glamorous. I covered Puerto Rico, Jamaica, parts of the southern States and bits of South America (eg. Chile) for six years. I say 'was' because two days after writing to you I resigned! I found out that my application to do a doctorate at the Institute of Transport Studies in Leeds had been accepted. I'm delighted. I start my PhD studies in May.

"Great website by the way."

Thanks, Robbie, and good luck with the PhD! Britain certainly needs better transport systems...

Last, but by no means least, Ann Cameron, now Knight, wrote again from Oshawa, Ontario -

"Hi Alan, long time no talk. I wanted to let you know that thanks to your website I have been contacted by Donnie Briggs who lives in Kilmarnock now. He went to the site, saw my name there and got in touch with me. We have been communicating for a little while now and are catching up on the good old days."

Ann then went on to ask about the delays in publishing the web pages, and later offered to donate a new name registration and hosting service for www.holmston.com.

"It will be my donation to the continuation of the web site."

Thanks, Ann, it's much appreciated.

It's been good to hear from all of you. Thanks for the good wishes, and hope we can continue to keep the Holmston web community together!
