2000/175 Events

A committee of parents, teachers and former pupils has now finished working on the 175th anniversary school year, which started in August 99 and went through to December 2000. There were representatives from the School Board and PTA, and two joint treasurers.

Fund-raising went on from 1999 for major events such as the whole-school trip to Edinburgh in June last year, and the commemorative gift for each child and each of the school staff. The gifts, commemorative paperweights, were given out at Easter 2000, and in August 2000 for the new Primary 1s.

As you can see next, the trip to Edinburgh before the summer holidays in 2000, went off very successfully. The next term continued with the highly successful Open Evening and Social Event for Former Pupils.

January 2001 saw the final Social Event for all pupils and parents, a free "Holmston Ball" at the end of the 175th Anniversary year.

At the start of the anniversary year, we did Bag-Packing in Safeways twice, though not all the dates offered, stayed available. Thanks again to Safeways for all their help, though.

Later in 1999-2000, we held fund-raising Race Nights, a special Summer Fair (normally run by the PTA) - also featured in issue 19, a Silent Auction, and a Car Treasure Hunt.

Some activities will leave resources which can be developed by the school in future years. Most money has gone or will go to three projects:

  • a gift, a Paperweight with the School crest, for each child and member of staff, as a permanent souvenir of the Anniversary/Millennium Year
  • a special educational trip for all pupils, to "Dynamic Earth" and Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, at no cost to pupils
  • a social event involving parents, teachers and children, again with some or all of the cost met from funds raised

Other Millennium/175 activities -

  • Special items of school uniform were produced with a Millennium/175 badge, as on the right
  • The Holmston School tartan was designed and produced, based on winning entries in a pupils' competition
  • A Scottish country dance, the Millennium Jig, was developed by a Scottish dance teacher, an FP, working with senior pupils

  • A Former Pupils' Association is planned to contact former pupils around Scotland and around the world
  • A Former Pupils' Social Event was held on a night near Saint Andrew's Day in November - see on. Twinkling badge
  • To publicise the events and perhaps help in fund-raising, some computers in the school were temporarily upgraded and connected to the Internet, and these Web pages were produced. We hope to make this Web site a permanent feature for pupils, parents and former pupils, at least as a record of the Anniversary Year.
