December 2001 Update

The New School Uniform

We hear that, before 1950, pupils at Holmston and many other schools in Ayr didn't have school uniforms. This changed at Holmston in 1950, the School's 125th Anniversary, after great preparations involving the then Headmaster, Mr Hunter.

Mr Hunter applied for a document to confirm the school's "coat of arms" which had been granted in 1930. There is a picture of this illuminated scroll elsewhere in the History Section. Like other teachers at Holmston, he seems to have taken a great interest in the school and to have involved the pupils in this.

"While in P5 which was then the "Qualifying" class the school colours were being chosen but I never got to wear the uniform!" (Elizabeth Kelly, now Davidson, 1943-50).

"When I was in Primary 4, I think, the new uniform was introduced. I seem to remember that Mr. Hunter (the headmaster) had some hand in the design of the new badge but can't be sure for certain. I do remember that somehow I turned up in school one day all dressed in the whole new uniform and was promptly whisked away by Mr. Hunter and taken round to all the classrooms to show everyone. He was so proud of it." (Susanne Nixon, now McMillan, 1948-55).
