Deer (is very excited about the Tartan)

2000/175 - The Holmston Tartan

The first set of ties and scarves, 50 of each, went on sale back at the 1999 Christmas Fayre. Response was good, so two further orders were placed, for more cloth to be woven and made into garments by our suppliers, Strathmore Woollens. They were sold at the School's 175th Anniversary Summer Fayre and at the Former Pupils' Reunion in November 2000.

The Holmston Tartan

We've kept some earlier news reports about the school tartan, which may be of interest to other schools and to Former Pupils. The cloth was really nice, and the pattern wasn't as garish as in the cartoon here. The items of clothing were really good value at only £5 for a tie and £10 for a soft, smooth but warm scarf. There were other things as well - see further down!

Again, a thank-you to the six pupils from P6 and P7 whose winning entries in a school competition were used to make up the tartan.

They were - Laura and Kirsten, then in P6, and Nicole, Adam, Kerry, and Gregor, all then in P7.
Certificate Presented To Each Winning Designer

They got a prize of a scarf each, and an individual Certificate to remind them of their days as Tartan Designers.

The local newspapers came to the school and took photos of them with Mr Queen, chairperson of the 2000/175 Committee, and Mrs Kennedy.

Other tartan items were available at the following prices -

Ties £5 Gents Kilt £170
Scarves £10 Lady's Kilted Skirt £60
Junior Kilt £35 Gents Trousers £60

Ladies Trousers £58
Waistcoats £40
Tammies £8
Holmston Badge, still twinkling

There's a description of the pattern on the next page.
