Another Holmston Hero
You remember in October we had three boys who chased a thief in the school playground one Sunday, with the headline "Holmston Heroes".
In November, the Fire Fighters in the UK were all on strike, for the first time in 25 years, and the Army and RAF were
left to put out any fires with their old and slow "Green Goddess" fire engines.
One Friday lunchtime, our Janitor, Mr King, saw smoke coming from the roof of a house next to the school, in Ashgrove Street.
Mr King didn't hesitate, he took a fire extinguisher from the school and ran round into the house.
He told the woman in the house to get out safely, then found the fire, in her tumble-drier, sprayed it with the
powder fire extinguisher, then dragged the tumble-drier, still burning, out of the house into the garden.
A striking Fire Fighter came too (during the strike, they came to see if people needed help, but didn't put out fires unless anyone was trapped).
Together they put the fire out, and about 15 minutes later, a policeman and an RAF fire engine arrived from the Territorial Army base in Chalmers Road.
Mr King breathed in a lot of smoke, but was back at work after a few hours.
His photo was in all the local newspapers. He's very modest, says he's trained in
fire-fighting, and was just helping out. But his quick thinking probably prevented a much bigger fire inside the house.
