December 2002 Update

Miss Sumner...

was very popular, and when she retired in 1967, her P7 class created this hand-painted and hand-printed Programme for a musical farewell including traditional classics, and pop songs of the day.

Before that, she'd taught many classes to sing and to play instruments.

The 1954 Ayrshire Music Festival was a triumph - see below.

First, on the left, the hand-painted cover for the 1967 programme, with a gold ribbon insert.

The "Ayr Advertiser" for 8th April, 1954, covered the judge's remarks on Miss Sumner's pupils -

In the senior competition, "There was one choir which had been particularly good - that of Holmston Primary School which had done some very high class work indeed...

And...

Later, "In the class open to choirs from Primary V, which was also won by Holmston Primary School...Holmston had given a delightful performance and the choir was conducted by someone who was a real musician. Their standard was quite out of the ordinary. They sang beautifully clear words and you were never in doubt as to what they were singing. They created atmosphere and sang with real sincerity and were uncommonly successful."

Miss Sumner's other classes did well too... P2 came 2nd, P3 came 1st, P4 came 1st, P5 came 1st in two separate competitions, P7 came 1st in two separate competitions, and P6 came 2nd in two separate competitions.

This wasn't just due to a few talented pupils. Most of these competitions had to include 75% or more of all the pupils in the classes.

Another venture around this time was the Odeon Club Choir, led by Miss Sumner with many Holmston pupils, most or all girls. The photo on the right shows the choir with the Cinema Manager, Mr Honeyman, and the accompanist, Mrs Marshall. Miss Sumner is at the back, on the right.
