Ann's Visit...Ann Cameron, now Knight (1956-63) got in touch in August, to announce that she was coming to Ayr for a week in September, and would like to visit the school. Ann had left Ayr with her parents to go to Canada in 1966, and had never been back for a visit, though relatives from Ayr have been regular visitors to Canada over the years. Mr Burnett laid on a tour of the school, and a school lunch. Later, Ann came to visit the web page editors, and we had a great evening. Ann is the part-owner of Auracom of Oshawa, an Internet Services company in Canada. She donated the computer space and annual registration fees for our website, www.holmston.com.
Mr Burnett, Alan Scott and son are now the proud owners of Auracom and other Canadian T-shirts, large-size. Much appreciated! In Canada, Ann has already met up with Ian Winslow, another FP from her class. Ian lives about 30 miles away from her. Back in Ayr, Ann visited the school with Donnie Briggs, another FP from her class, and later met Philip McAnespie and Janet Rorison (now Weir). Ann had lost touch with Janet, but Mr Burnett found Janet's entry in the visitors' book from the FP Reunion. Ann toured the school, including the classrooms, the new hall and the even newer IT room. Like other FPs who've visited the school, she renewed a lot of memories. She's talking about another visit in the next few years. Haste ye back! David Fraser (1942-49) wrote to us in June, about one of the harder-to-read entries in the visitors' book from the FP Reunion. There were about 10 names that the editor couldn't make out from peoples' signatures. But I definitely wasn't getting at people's handwriting! "Hello there. I think David F... is David Fraser. My sister and I attended Holmston in the 1940's. We lived then in Mill Street and I went on to Ayr Grammar and my sister Mary to Newton Academy when the family moved to Main Street, Ayr. Our brother Charlie also went to Holmston before going on to Newton Academy. "Mr Hunter was the head master when we were there. "My writing has not improved any but with the aid of computers and 'Spell Check' I can now get by. It was subsequently discovered that I am dyslexic. "My son is the same but he has done very well in life. "Kindest regards to all at Holmston. "David Fraser" David, thanks for getting in touch and for your good wishes, and sorry if I seemed to be making fun of peoples' signatures. Mine is pretty hard to read too... Glad to hear your son has done well. Dyslexia must be a worry for parents, but there's a lot more to life than neat writing and spelling, and it's good for us all to be reminded of this.
