During our walk from Heads of Ayr to Dunure we looked at
some rocks and minerals.
Two of the minerals we looked at were
Agate and Jasper.
Agate, when broken up, had colourful
rings on the inside.
Jasper is Man U red in colour.
When polished up and if there are no cracks, these semi-precious
stones can be made into jewellery.
We also looked at 3 types of granite. The Ailsa Craig
Granite is a blue speckled colour.
The Arran Granite
is black and white with big white crystals.
Finally the
Loch Doon Granite is red, black and white. None of these
stones are precious.
All through your life you use rocks and rock components.
From the time you are born, you may be christened in a stone
font, and when you die you may have a stone headstone.
