Visit to Nickajack Elementary School
While Mr Burnett was in America, he went with other teachers at the Conference, to visit an elementary school called
Nickajack Elementary School. This school teaches "Character Education" as well as other subjects.
When they arrived, the visitors were met by pupils wearing bright yellow "Character Education" sashes and belts.
Everywhere inside the school, there are signs and posters stressing the importance of good character and, further down this page,
to "Be The Best You Can Be".
There's a huge cartoon super-hero character, called "Character Ed", on the wall.
There are even signs on the ceilings, and notices about the way they treat their pupils - "Welcome to Nickajack Elementary, Home of the Golden Treatment".
It's a new school for about 800 pupils, well-equipped and well-staffed. Some of the things they teach about "good character" could be useful for schools in Scotland, though the methods
might be different.
Mr Burnett has written a report on his visit, for other teachers in Scotland.
Will "Character Ed" come to Holmston?
