Caerlaverock Castle

Another Castle, Caerlaverock, Dumfriesshire

Caerlaverock Castle is a ruined castle by the coast near Dumfries. It was demolished and rebuilt more than once during wars with England.

It finally closed during the Civil War, when Scottish allies of Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentary forces, destroyed the buildings inside. Today only the high walls, turrets and moat remain.

Bow and Siege Engine

In the grounds, "Scottish Heritage" have a shop and will sell you toy bows and arrows, and swords.

There are replicas of the large mediaeval siege engines which were used to attack the castle during earlier wars. These siege engines were like giant wooden catapults, throwing rocks through the air against the castle walls and the people inside.

More Siege Engines

Today the siege engines are surrounded by small picnic tables rather than by knights on horseback!

There's a Nature Trail marked out through the woods by the Castle, and nearby, a great Nature Reserve, with lots of migrating birds and waterfowl.

Worth a visit...
