Norman Faulds (1948-55) is a golf enthusiast, and Susanne Nixon (now MacMillan) has told how she
got in touch with him from Canada after seeing him on TV at an Open Golf Championship at Muirfield. She wrote
to him c/o the Golf Club, and the Post Office forwarded her letter.
The British Open Championship was at Muirfield again this year, and Norman wrote with an exclusive picture of
this year's champion, Ernie Els. Ernie won for the first time after several years of unsuccessful attempts.
"Dear Alan,
"Have just fulfilled a boyhood dream and spent a whole week at The Open.
Sat in the stand at the 18th yesterday and watched Ernie Els play the last
shot of the Championship. Unfortunately cameras are not allowed on competition
days, but they are on the practice days. When he accepted the Old Claret Jug,
Ernie mentioned in his speech that he had come to Muirfield last Monday.
"When I checked today I discovered that I had photographed the very first
shot he played on the course on that practice day.
"In case it might be of
interest for the school mag I have attached it with this e-mail. You never know,
it might encourage budding young golfers at Holmston to do an Els and try,
try, try again!
"Slainte mhath!
